Fairtrade
Carlisle and Brampton were awarded Fairtrade status in 2005.
Fairtrade aims to strengthen the economic position of small producers in the developing world and help to alleviate poverty. To qualify for Fairtrade status, various outlets such as shops and cafes must offer goods from developing countries.
Since 2005, the number of Fairtrade outlets in Carlisle and Brampton has steadily increased and Fairtrade products can be found in many shops, supermarkets, cafes and restaurants in the area. Accommodation providers can also qualify for Fairtrade status and there are several bed and breakfast establishments, particularly along Hadrian's Wall, that provide Fairtrade products for their visitors.
