Rivers
Carlisle's three rivers, the Eden, the Caldew and the Petteril created a natural defensive position, recognised by the Romans on founding the city they called Luguvalium. The rivers later provided Carlisle with a source of power for water-driven mills.
The River Eden flows through a green corridor in the heart of the city, passing through Rickerby Park where it is joined by the River Petteril and along Bitts Park to the confluence with the River Caldew.
Today the riverbanks are a haven for wildlife and provide excellent walking and fishing opportunities for Carlisle's residents and visitors.
