Leading political thinker Jamie Bartlett will discuss and answer questions about his ground-breaking new work Radicals (£20, published 18 May 2017 William Heinemann).

The world is changing in unexpected ways. The power of radical ideas and groups is growing. What was once considered extreme is now the mainstream. But what is the real power of radicals? And what does the future hold?

In Radicals Jamie Bartlett, one of the world’s leading thinkers on radical politics and technology, explores the strange and exciting worlds of the innovators, disruptors, idealists and extremists who are rejecting the way we live now, and attempting to find alternatives. From dawn raids into open mines to the darkest recesses of the internet, Radicals introduces us to some of the most secretive and influential movements today: techno-futurists questing for immortality, far-right groups seeking to close borders, militant environmentalists striving to save the planet's natural reserves by any means possible, libertarian movements founding new countries, autonomous cooperatives in self-sustaining micro-societies, and psychedelic pioneers attempting to heal society with the help of powerful hallucinogens. This is a timely and insightful examination of a subject that is rarely out of the headlines. As well as providing a fascinating glimpse at the people and ideas driving these groups, Radicals also presents a startling argument: radicals are not only the symptoms of a deep unrest with the world today, but might also provide the most plausible models for our future.

Jamie Bartlett lives in London and works for the think tank Demos, where he specialises in online social movements and the impact of technology on society. He is the author of The Dark Net and Orwell Versus the Terrorists. He is one of the leading thinkers on radical groups and Internet movements and has discussed the subject widely, including Newsnight, the Today Programme and Sky News, as well as delivering a hugely popular TED talk. Jamie is signed up to present a two-part documentary on technology for BBC 2 to be aired in Autumn 2017, and is currently in talks with Netflix to present an original documentary series on radical political groups.
