The Solway has its own identity and creates a feeling that you have stepped back in time. This is the lesser explored yet breathtakingly beautiful part of Cumbria and south west Scotland that has a rich history full of fascination and intrigue. A pivotal place so important during many stages of significant national, and sometimes world history. This coastal area of south west Scotland and north west England on the edge of the English Lake District, reveals rich landscapes and seascapes as well as places and people that have shaped the lives of not only the local communities but many who are now flung far and wide, across the globe, far away from this mystical land. The Solway Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) was designated in December 1964 in recognition of the quality of its landscape and its significant historic and scientific interest. It stretches from Rockcliffe in the north to Maryport in the south, covering about 115 square kilometres of the Solway Plain. The primary purpose of this designation is to conserve and enhance the natural beauty of the area.
