Borderlines aims to promote an annual celebration of the written and spoken word in Carlisle, Cumbria.
The festival is a focus for literary excellence, attracting high quality speakers and nurturing and showcasing local writing talent. It provides new opportunities for local people to experience literature in direct, accessible, and dynamic ways, and helps to foster literary skills within the community.
Managed by a team of volunteers, the festival has been running annually since 2014, and is a popular event on the Border City’s cultural calendar. Cancelled last year due to Covid-19, organisers have been busy behind the scenes working on a new approach – this year’s event will be a blended festival with chances to participate in person and online, depending on personal preference.
Local writers taking part in the 2021 festival include crime writer M.W. Craven and Carlisle born restaurant critic Grace Dent, among many more from near and far.
They are also thrilled to welcome acclaimed novelist, screenwriter and actress Ruth Jones (pictured) to discuss her second novel, the instant Sunday Times bestseller Us Three.
Borderlines strives to promote a life-long love of reading across all sections and ages of the community.
The festival will be held in a collection of easy to access city centre venues including the Crown and Mitre Hotel, Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery, the Tithe Barn and Cakes and Ales Café. Events will include talks, panel discussions and workshops. Selected events will be live streamed.
Borderlines Book Festival has been developed through partnership working between public and private enterprise by Bookends of Carlisle, Cumbria County Library Service and Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery.
