2018 was a year to remember in Carlisle with some fantastic events in both the city and rural areas. From the stunning poppies at the castle to the newly-expanded Fringe and a host of Christmas events – there was something for everyone.
And there are lots of great events already lined up for 2019. There’s a selection of some of the most popular below, so you can get the dates in your diary.

Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery is celebrating 125 years with a series of special events throughout the year. This includes an exhibition using recollections from staff and visitors to explore Tullie House's history and what makes it so special today. The exhibition opens on Friday 7 February.
Fancy a challenge? How about tackling the giant obstacle course at Gelt Gladiator? There’s a choice of 10-mile, 10k, 6k and 3k treks at the fifth running of the Gladiator at Walton, near Brampton, on Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 June.
Carlisle has garnered a fine reputation for outdoor summer concerts in recent years with Lionel Richie, Paloma Faith and Olly Murs among the star visitors in recent years. The first major outdoor concert announced for 2019 will see pop favourites Madness take over Bitts Park on Sunday 9 June.
The Cumberland Show is the area’s premier agricultural show and will take place at East Park, Brisco, on Saturday 15 June. The show combines tradition and agriculture with a modern focus to create a celebration of farming, food and countryside.
The highlight of the summer racing calendar is at Carlisle Racecourse on Wednesday 26 June. Bell & Plate Day includes the country’s oldest horse race, the Carlisle Bell, which dates to 1599.
For music festival lovers, the 10th anniversary Music on the Marr takes place in the beautiful village of Castle Carrock from Thursday 18 July to Sunday 21. This eclectic feast of live music, art, real ale and food was voted best community arts initiative at the 2018 Carlisle Living Awards.
There’ll be a sea of pink in Bitts Park on Sunday 14 July for the annual Cancer Research UK Race for Life. There are 5k, 5k pretty muddy and 10k routes.
Another significant date in the agricultural calendar is Saturday 10 August, when Dalston Show is held. The show has been a popular event since the 19th Century, showcasing local agriculture and rural skills.
Last year’s Carlisle Fringe expanded to put on more than 100 events at venues throughout the city. 2019’s festival will take place between Friday 23 August and Sunday 1 September. Dozens of the shows and events are free, many are crafted and produced right here in the city.
The Great Cumbrian Run is a fixture on the Carlisle calendar for both experienced runners and those wanting to test themselves for the first time. The 38th city and country half-marathon will take place on Sunday 6 October. It will again start and finish at the Sheepmount Stadium.
The Borderlines Book Festival has become a firm favourite and in 2019 will take place between Monday 30 September and Sunday 6 October. The festival is an annual celebration of the written and spoken word and attracts high quality speakers, as well as local writing talent.
