The award-winning International Market will be returning to Carlisle over the bank holiday weekend with over 30 traders bringing a real flavour of Europe and beyond to the city centre with wonderful foods and a great range of crafts and gifts from around the world. From Thursday 22 to Monday 26 August, English Street in the heart of the city centre will be bursting with flavour and a fantastic family friendly atmosphere.
For food lovers, there will be a tempting selection of continental and international flavours to sample. On offer will be Spanish paella, Greek gyros, Moroccan tagines, Mediterranean tapas, Chinese and Indian street foods to name but a few, and for those wanting to take the flavours of the world home with them there will be a great selection of fresh foods including olives, cheeses, salami and handmade breads and cakes baked fresh on site.
Also, browse some of the great craft stalls including handmade jewellery, Fair Trade wooden furniture and carvings, and of course the famous Dutch Flowers on Tour selling a huge array of shrubs, bulbs, beautiful plants and trees with some great garden ornaments.
When you’re all shopped out you can relax and unwind in the Continental Street Bar with a variety of Continental beers and wine, the perfect interlude to your unique shopping experience or it’s a great way to end your global experience.
An ancient Proclamation will be recited at the Market Cross on Saturday 24 August at 10am. The Proclamation is a declaration of Carlisle City Council’s rights to hold an annual Fair in August, originally granted to the citizens of Carlisle in 1352 by Edward III.
A procession including The Mayor of Carlisle, Cllr Marilyn Bowman, Sword and Mace Bearers and other Civic Dignitaries will make its way from St Cuthbert’s Church to the Market Cross in the city centre.
