We continue our programme of literary events in Cakes and Ale cafe with an evening with novelist Mary Paulson-Ellis. Mary will discuss and answer questions about her debut novel The Other Mrs Walker, a dark, beguiling mystery novel that transports the reader between the seedy underworld of wartorn London and the comfortable present life of Edinburgh. The book and ticket to the event are available for £7.99 from Bookends and Cakes and Ale. As the book is available now there is plenty of time to read it before the event so this is a perfect evening for reading groups!

Mary Paulson-Ellis lives in Edinburgh. She has won numerous awards for her short stories which have appeared in a variety of anthologies and magazines and has a Masters in creative writing from Glasgow University. The Other Mrs Walker is Mary’s debut novel and is published by Macmillan imprint Mantle. Since being published at the start of April the paperback edition has been in the Times bestseller charts and has had a plethora of rave reviews.

The Other Mrs Walker begins in 2010, when an elderly woman known only as “Mrs Walker” dies alone in a freezing Edinburgh flat. Shortly afterwards, middle-aged Margaret, washed-up, dishonest, unwanted and broke, returns from London to Edinburgh. Desperate for work Margaret finds herself at the Office for Lost People and becomes obsessed with uncovering Mrs Walker’s identity. The narrative moves effortlessly from the present to the 1920s and covers much of the 20th century detailing insanity, poverty, exploitation, child murder and a series of women who are desperate to escape the confines of their lives and sever their ties with the past.

'One of the strongest debuts of the year' - Herald

‘Ambitious, intriguing and atmospheric’ - The Guardian

‘A wonderful, inventive debut with an intricate and intriguing structure, characters that fascinate and a beady authorial eye for detail.’ - The Daily Mail
