Cumbria‘s Museum of Military Life was founded in 1932 and tells the 300-year story of Cumbria’s army regiments through books, documents, photographs and artefacts. The museum is located right in the heart of Carlisle Castle.
The museum has always been located in Carlisle Castle but in 2014, with the help of Heritage Lottery Funding, it was moved from Queen Mary’s Tower in the Inner Ward to the much larger Alma block in the Outer Ward.
This move has provided more space and better access for visitors, and gives the opportunity to display items and vehicles that were impossible to accommodate in the old location. It allows reinforcing of the strong links between Cumbria’s regiments and the local community, and sharing remarkable stories of courage, loyalty and service.
The museum will continue to be an important source of information for former soldiers and their families, historians and family history researchers. And by reaching out to schools and colleges, will help keep the memories alive for future generations.
There is a café in the museum offering great coffee, tea, soft drinks and light bites as eat in or take away options.
The museum has a small shop stocking a range of publications (many relating to WWI and WWII) a range of historical reproduction newspapers and collectable replicas relating to WWI & WWII and various souvenirs.
Please be aware that when Google Maps reports the castle as closed the Military Musuem can be open. Check out the times below

Carlisle Cricket Club pavilion at Edenside was flooded in 2005 and 2015. the club commissioned archaeologists to carry out investigations into moving the clubhouse which uncovered evidence of Roman baths. The work has since uncovered significant archaeology and high quality find of a premier league importance.
The dig is still ongoing and its future plans are still in the planning phases. You can learn more in our Roman Carlisle digital story, including a photo gallery of the dig and its many artifacts.
