Approximately 9 miles east of Carlisle is the bustling market town of Brampton, Cumbria. This busy little place is just 2 miles from Hadrian’s Wall and offers plenty to see and do on the outskirts of Carlisle. Conveniently located just off the A69 which connects Brampton to Carlisle and Newcastle, the town dates back to the 7th century where it began life as an Anglican settlement and is now home to a close-knit community with a thriving calendar of local events.
Offering easy access to Hadrian’s Wall, Carlisle, the Lake District, the Eden Valley and the North Pennines AONB, Brampton Carlisle is an excellent place to base yourself for exploring historic Carlisle and the ancient frontier of the Roman Empire in particular. Within just a few miles of the town are the fort at Brampton Old Church, Stanegate Fort, a defensive outpost along the ancient Roman Road, Stanegate, Banks Turret, Birdoswald Roman Fort and Vindolanda. Also nearby is Lanercost Priory, a fascinating English Heritage site that suffered due to its proximity to Hadrian’s Wall.
The town itself sprawls outwards from the restored Moot Hall, an octagonal market hall in the centre of Brampton, towards pockets of ancient woodland and rolling hills. In the middle of Brampton are eateries aplenty and independent retailers offering local goods and services. Brampton is an excellent base from which to explore historic Carlisle and the surrounding area of northern Cumbria. From here, Talkin Tarn and Walby Farm Park are excellent places to keep kids of all ages entertained. You also have the Solway Aviation Museum and the Lake District Airport right on your doorstep. Choose from camping or glamping, a self-catering cottage or a locally run guesthouse and stay a few nights here to make the best of your excellent surroundings.
Brampton is home to an active community and there is a busy calendar of events on all year round. Whether you’re a fervent foodie or a master crafter, you’ll find film nights and themed pub dinners, local festivals and exhibitions right here in Brampton.
