As the northernmost city in England, the thriving metropolis of Carlisle is both a busy modern hub and a historically important place due to its strategic location across the neck of the country, just a short hop from the Scottish border. The border city of Carlisle dates back almost 2,000 years and is most famous for Hadrian’s Wall – the northern frontier of the Roman Empire. Today visitors flock to Carlisle and Hadrian’s Wall to walk the ancient footprint of this fascinating site and explore the remains of historic Roman forts, castles and garrisons dotted along the route.
The most impressive of these is Carlisle Castle, situated in the middle of this remarkable city. Here you can walk the castle walls, explore the dungeons and learn more about the tactical importance of this castle during subsequent wars between the English and the Scottish. Just a short walk from the castle, you’ll find other interesting heritage sites, such as the squat twin towers of Carlisle Citadel, stunning Carlisle Cathedral and Tullie House Carlisle, a wonderful museum and gallery offering a glimpse into the vibrant history of the area.
There is plenty to see and do in Carlisle, both within the city and just a short journey outside of its perimeter. From the Roman fort of Birdoswald and the Solway Aviation Museum which are close to Brampton to the east, to the beautiful Lake District National Park to the south and the picturesque Cumbrian coastline and Western Lakes. Jump on the scenic Carlisle to Settle Railway line to explore the Eden Valley which sprawls through eastern Cumbria along the edge of the North Pennines AONB and the Yorkshire Dales or take the Cumbrian Coast Railway line to journey along the rugged coastline where the mountains meet the sea.
