Serving a range of hot, cold and alcoholic drinks, delicious homemade cakes and light lunches. With an idyllic secret garden, homemade cakes, local ales, a delicious menu (with plenty of vegetarian and vegan options!) and of course our classic brews and blends, we’re proud to be a warm, independent café that has grown to be a firm favourite with many in the city!
We are dog friendly and regularly host events collaborating with bookends book shop. We also serve a selection of alcoholic drinks including our Prosecco Afternoon Tea
In late 2016 the café became the start of the multi-venue State Management Scheme Museum and now features a permanent exhibition on the nationalisation of breweries and public houses in the twentieth century in Carlisle. The café is used for author events, book launches and is also available for private hire in the evenings.
Cakes and Ale joined the John Watt & Son family in 2022!
