Visitors to Lanercost Priory are likely to be attracted here by the peace, tranquility and worship of this beautiful Priory, not to mention the stunning Cumbrian setting. There is still a great deal for you to see in this best-preserved of Cumbrian monasteries.
The beautiful and now tranquil setting of Augustinian Lanercost Priory belies an often troubled history. Standing close to Hadrian's Wall, it suffered frequent attacks during the long Anglo-Scottish wars, once by Robert Bruce in person. The mortally sick King Edward I rested here for five months in 1306-7, shortly before his death on his final campaign. Yet there is still much to see in this best-preserved of Cumbrian monasteries. The east end of the noble 13th-century church survives to its full height, housing within its dramatic triple tier of arches some fine monuments. There is parking next to the Church. Cars coming through the arch will need to be aware that there is a height restriction for vehicles coming through. There is also ample free parking (for about 20 cars) at the privately owned tearooms, about two minutes from the entrance.
Approximately 9 miles east of Carlisle is the bustling market town of Brampton, Cumbria. This busy little place is just 2 miles from Hadrian’s Wall and offers plenty to see and do on the outskirts of Carlisle. Conveniently located just off the A69 which connects Brampton to Carlisle and Newcastle, the town dates back to the 7th century where it began life as an Anglican settlement and is now home to a close-knit community with a thriving calendar of local events.
