Cumbria’s multi-award winning aviation museum is located on Carlisle Lake District Airport and is now the home of over 24 historically important aircraft; the museum is entirely run by a group of dedicated volunteers who freely give their time to preserve our fantastic collection, which now includes airfield fire engines and vehicles.
One of our latest aircraft is the only example left in the world which is a Blackburn Beverley in the 1950’s the Beverley was the RAFs largest aircraft and was also the forerunner of the Hercules, XB259 is currently been restored back into display condition a project that will take approximately two years to complete before she can be opened for visitors to go on board.
One of our most popular exhibits is our AVRO Vulcan XJ823 B2, the only surviving Maritime Radar Recognisance (MRR) version, your museum entrance ticket will give you access to the flight deck, all access to our Vulcan is subject to aircraft serviceability and staffing levels, access cannot be guaranteed.
We also have an RAF Bedford aircrew bus as featured on Bangers & Cash, this is often used to transport visitors to the Vulcan, in addition our fire engine is a Bedford Green Goddess now a Red Goddess as it was painted red when Carlisle City Council bought it back in the late 60’s to be part of the airports fire service, it is currently under a full restoration program before it goes on display.
We have many more aircraft and aviation artefacts on display in our two display buildings, one of which houses our Vampire jet this was the aircraft that started the museum over 50 years ago, our main building has our gift and coffee shop, and many of the items are unique to our museum, there is something for all ages
