Roman Women: In Carlisle and the Arena

Join Tullie for an afternoon of talks to celebrate International Women's Day

We will be joined by experts on the topic, Alexandra Sills and the Uncovering Roman Carlisle team. They will be sharing insights on life as a female gladiator in a male dominated world and what the Cricket Club dig tells us about women's lives in Roman Carlisle.

Alexandra Sills: Women in the Roman Arena
We think of the gladiators of the Colosseum displaying their masculinity, ferocity and discipline but what of the women of the arena? What were their lives like and what did it take to be a female gladiator in a male world?

Uncovering Roman Carlisle
Join us for a talk from the Uncovering Roman Carlisle team about women’s lives in Roman Carlisle. What do the finds from the Cricket Club dig tell us about the women who lived here – their brooches, hairpins, drinking vessels and altars all give us clues.

Alexandra’s talk begins at 1.15pm and the Uncovering Roman Carlisle talk begins at 2.45pm. There will be a 20-minute break between the two talks.
